Recycling Reminder:

Paper boxes are located in our parking lot for paper recycling – no cardboard or plastic.
SVDP Clothing boxes are located in the parking lot also – to recycle – clean, wearable clothing and shoes.

Dispose of Pharmaceuticals Safely

If you have expired or unused medications in your home, dispose of them safely and responsibly using the City’s pharmaceutical disposal drop box program.

Alderman Laurino has been a proponent of this important program for close to seven years.

Drop off sites are open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

The most convenient drop off locations for 39th Ward residents are: 16th District Police Station (5151 N. Milwaukee Avenue) and 17th District Police Station (4650 N. Pulaski Road).

Things You Can Do Around the House to Help the Environment

Insulate water heaters, and set it at 130 degrees
Fix leaky pipes
Tune up your furnace
Insulate and weather strip your house
Lower your thermostat one degree for every hour you will be away or asleep
Turn off lights when you leave the room

Recycling Changes Effective January 1, 2016

Beginning January 1, all recyclables must be placed in the blue cart loose without a bag. Recyclables contained in bags of any kind will no longer be accepted.

This change is intended to not only help our environment, but also reduce unnecessary costs incurred by the City as a result of contaminated blue carts. Any bag at all keeps haulers from seeing if non-recyclable materials are in the blue cart. Plastic bags also contaminate the recycling stream and damaging the equipment at sorting facilities.

Currently, five materials can be recycled in Chicago blue carts. They include:

  • Plastic containers (plastic bottles and containers with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 markings);
  • Glass (jars and bottles);
  • Metal (aluminum, tin, or steel cans, foil and pie tins);
  • Cartons (milk cartons, juice cartons and aseptic containers); and
  • Paper (flattens cardboard, office paper, file folders, magazines, catalogs, newspapers, junk mail, telephone books, etc.).

Recycle Your Paper, and Used Clothing:

  • In our parking lot are newspaper bins for recycling.
  • St. Vincent dePaul clothing drop box, for clothing and shoe sin good condition.

Things You Can Do with Transportation to Help the Environment

Drive the speed limit, and accelerate and slow down gradually
Carpool
Use public transportation
Bike or walk for short trips
Keep your car tuned, tires properly inflated, and the air conditioner
well maintained and only service them at repair facilities that recycle CFCs
When purchasing a car, select an energy-efficient model
